Shakyamuni Teaching:
Peace and Enlightenment
Shakyamuni, the Buddha of our age, makes the gesture of teaching (turning the wheel of Dharma). He attained “bodhi” or awakening after six years of fasting and meditation and was then called “Buddha,” as he was the “awakened one.” His first sermon taught the middle way between acetic and indulgent lifestyles. This totally realized being offers us his teachings that we may discover unconditional love, universal peace and the Buddha nature within each of us. The historical Buddha (563 BC – 483 BC), Shakyamuni was a prince who renounced his kingdom to seek and eventually attain perfect enlightenment.
Suggested meditation for peace and enlightenment:
Breathe slowly and deeply. Allow your body to relax and your mind to become calm and clear. Visualize this image of Shakyamuni Buddha teaching in front of you. Picture yourself and all other beings seated before him, drinking in his words. Chant the mantra: “Om muni muni maha muniye svaha!”
