About the Artist: Agung Setiawati
“Hi, my name is Agung Setiawati. I was born in Tabanan, Bali. Together with my family, I create handicrafts from natural materials. When we started, it was actually just a pastime. It turned out that people like our work, so we were challenged to create new designs and explore materials that we had never used before to make them more interesting. As a result, from this inspiration our new work has enabled us to live a proper life. Unfortunately, due to economic instability in Indonesia, sales have been slow…We hope that people in many countries will see our designs, therefore generating more activity for our creativity.
“As a Balinese woman, running a workshop never makes me forget my responsibility to family and society. Community in Bali is very strict, and local rules and laws are meant to preserve Balinese tradition so it lasts forever. Almost every day is a holiday here in Bali, when we should go to the temple and pray. Different types of offerings must be prepared for different ceremonies, and this preparation is usually done by women. The offering itself consists of a large array of fruits, cakes, flowers, and certain decorations made of coconut leaves.”
