About the Artist: Iwan

“My name is Made Budi Setiawan Sari, but my family and friends call me Iwan for short. My Balinese father and Javanese mother introduced me to two different traditions and cultures. I also have many friends and relatives in both Bali and Java.

“When I was still studying at a university in Jogjakarta, I met and fell in love with a nice and beautiful woman. Her name is Rita and she’s from East Java. We have been married for almost three years and have a cute little daughter. My wife is from Ngawi, which for years has been renowned as having the best teak in Indonesia. The first time I came there, I was amazed at how many teak trees grow in the area, for almost every people has a teak tree growing outside their house. The wood is used mainly to make furniture. However, it is a pity to see how they treat the leftover wood, which remains of good quality. Because the remains are not big enough for a piece of furniture, they are used as either firewood or base for their stoves.

“In Bali I have seen people create many beautiful things from different kinds of materials. Being Balinese my reality has challenged me to create something different with teak. I combine my ideas with the techniques I read in books to create vases, lampshades, trays, clocks, and much more. I gathered some people around my wife’s village and asked them to help and join me in realizing my idea. Now we work together and we are all able to provide for our families.”
